Nominator's project description

Carlo Ginzburg is one of the outstanding historians of our time. His work has had an enormous impact both within the field of history itself and in many neighbouring disciplines. He is particularly known for his invention of a micro-historical approach. His philologically informed studies tend to focus on the Middle Ages and the early modern period, but his work covers all eras from antiquity to modernity. Inspired by the Aristotelian motto "art imitates nature", his research at the ZfL will trace analogies in medieval thought between (biological) reproduction and the replication of objects.
